Another Commemorative Cancellation
Poltava oblast issued another commemorative cancellation; this one in honor of Poltava-born Vera Kholodna, a famous "Russian" star of the silent film. She is described as "a small, intense woman with dramatic grey eyes and a mop of black hair, and she commands the eye whenever she comes into a scene."

Vera Kholodna
Born Aug. 30, 1893 -- Died Feb. 16, 1919
In reasearching Vera Kholodna, I was fascinated by details of her life and death. She is said to have appreared in almost one hundred films, but many have been lost.
Vera died in Odessa, a victim of the Spanish Influenza epidemic in 1919. Ironically, a film of her funeral is considered one of her most famous works.
