Corner Blocks and Marginal Inscriptions

Printed in Canada

An interesting philatelic development was added to Ukrainian stamp collecting when the Canadian Bank Note Company printed eight issues for Ukraine between March and October 1992. Like all Canadian stamps, each corner block had an inscription printed, except that inscriptions in some corners were in the Ukrainian language.

The upper left and bottom right margins were in Ukrainian text, while the top right and bottom left margins were in English text.

This particular example comes from the block of stamps commemorating (remaining links on this page show popups of stamps) Letter-writing week. Along with the text, color dots, or "traffic lights," were printed in the margins to show what process colors were used to print that particular stamp.

Look at the Independence stamp (Flag and Coat of Arms) block, which is a good example with the English on the bottom-left margin or selvage.
