Corner Blocks and Marginal Inscriptions - Part 2

Printed in Austria

Corner block collecting took another interesting turn in late '92, when the Austrian State Printer in Vienna began printing stamps for Ukraine.

The upper-right margins were in Ukrainian text, while the bottom-right margins were in German text. A trident appears with both. This particular example comes from the block of stamps commemorating the (popup) Ukrainian Diaspora in Austria.

The Austrian State Printers printed only eight different stamps. The other seven, printed in 1993, include:

  • Coat of Arms (popups) Lviv. &Kviv., 2 versions
  • Cardinal Joseph Slipyj
  • Airplanes (Air Mail Wien...Kiev), 2v: (popups) 35, 50, 2 versions
  • Easter
  • Declaration of Human Rights

According to John-Paul Himka of Lemberg Stamps and Covers, Ukrainian postal authorities were less than happy with the Austrian State Printers, who had been told not to include marginal inscriptions. Ukrainian authorities were primarily concerned with maintaining an adequate supply of postage stamps, where the Austrian printers, they claimed, were pursuing philatalic market interests.
