Descriptions of skills at the Snowplow Sam, Basic 1-8, and Freestyle 1-6 levels.

Snowplow Sam 1
1. Sit and stand up with skates on: off ice. To stand up, roll over onto hands and knees. Place one foot between the hands then the other foot, balance, then push up from a kneeling position to a standing positon.
2. Sit and stand up: on ice. Lower the center of gravity by bending the knees and slide off to one hip using the hands on the ice to control the upper body. To stand up, follow the instructions from "off ice" sitting and standing up.
3. March in place. With arms extended parallel to the ice and held slightly in front, lift one foot and then the other. Do this action like a soldier.
4. March forward, eight to ten steps. Using a marching action, move forward, with arms held slightly in front and parallel to the ice.
5. March, then glide on two feet. March forward 8 to 10 steps, glide forward on two feet. Hold glide for a count of three. (Coach will count).
6. Dip in place, bend knees. Bend knees while balancing on two feet.

Snowplow Sam 2
1. March followed by a long glide. March forward for 4 steps then glide to a count of 4. (Coach will count).
2. Dip while moving. March forward for 4 steps, do a two foot glide to a count of 4, then dip holding for a count of 4. (Coach will count).
3. Rocking Horse, one forward, one backward swizzle action. From a standing position alternate one forward and one backward swizzle. Place heels together, bend knees, and move feet forward around a small oval or "fish" (drawn on the ice), until toes touch, then move feet backward around the oval until heels touch. Continue with this "rocking" forward to backward and backward to forward action.
4. Forward two foot swizzles, two to three in a row. Progress forward using the simultaneous in and out movement of both feet on the inside edges. Minimum 2-3 swizzles, a moving start is optional.
5. Two foot hop on a spot. From a standstill position do a small jump in place, land on two feet (toes first). Use a slight knee bend prior to and after the hop. Maintain balance with arms held out and slightly to the front, parallel to the ice.
6. Backward wiggles, six in a row. Stand with the feet held in a parallel position, the width of the hips apart. As the hips turn side to side, the arms move against this hip action to create a backward motion. Minimum of 6 wiggles.

Snowplow Sam 3
1. Forward skating, eight to ten steps. Skate forward in a stepping or walking action, with the toes slightly turned out. Hold the arms slightly to the front and parallel to the ice. Shoulders and hips should face the direction of travel.
2. Forward one foot glide, right and left. After a moving start, pick up one foot, placing it next to the skating foot. Balance for a count of 2, or a distance of one foot (12 inches). (Coach will count).
3. Forward two foot swizzles, four to six in a row. By using an in and out simultaneous movement of both feet (on inside edges), progress forward. Each swizzle begins as heels of both feet are together and toes angled slightly out. The knees bend as pressure is appplied to inside edges, with the feet moving forward initiating a forward glide. After moving toes outward, the knees then straighten as the toes pull back together. The start is optional, with a minimum of 4 to 6 continuous swizzles, demonstrating a forward gliding action.
4. Backward two foot swizzles, four to six in a row. By using an in and out simultaneous movement of both feet (on inside edges), progress backward. Each swizzle begins as toes of both feet are turned in while the heels are angled out. Bend both knees and apply pressure on the inside edges as the feet move backward inintiationg a glide. the knees then straighten as heels pull back together. The start is optional, with a minimum of 4 to 6 continuous swizzles, demonstrating a backward gliding action.
5. Forward snowplow stop with skid. While moving, and with the heels of the feet angled slightly out, do a two foot or one foot stop movement in which both feet (or one foot) create a skidding action (making snow) on the ice, creating a complete stop.
6. Skate forward in a slalom pattern. Move forward in and out of 5 to 6 markers that are on the ice. Skate around the markers with both feet parallel and use a slight twisting action of the shoulders against the hips (creating a slalom action). Marching around markers is optional.

Basic 1
1. Sit on ice and stand up. If possible do this off ice prior to skating on the ice. Lower the center of gravity by bending the knees, and slide onto one hip, using the hands on the ice to control the upper body. To stand up, roll over onto hands and knees, place one foot on the ice between the hands, then the other foot, balance, and then push up to a standing position.
2. March forward across the ice. With arms extended parallel to the ice and held slightly in front, begin moving forward by lifting one foot and then the other with a marching action.
3. Skate forward and glide on two feet. After marching forward, glide on two feet, with ankles erect, feet parallel and held within the width of the hips, for a distance equal to the skaters's height.
4. Glide forward on two feet and dip. After marching or skating forward and using the two foot glide technique, bend knees for the dip. The upper body will be held straight, head held slightly in front of and over knees with arms extended forward and parallel to the ice.
5. Rocking Horse- forward and backward swizzle action, two or three. From a standing position, the skater continuously alternates forward and backward swizzles. Place heels together and move feet forward around a small oval or "fish" (drawn on the ice) until the toes touch, then move feet backward until heels touch. Continue with the "rocking" forward to backward and backward to forward action.
6. Forward two foot swizzles. By using an in and out, simultaneous movement of both feet (on inside edges), progress forward. Each swizzle begins with heels together and toes angled slightly out. The knees bend as pressure is applied to inside edges with feet moving forward iitiating a forward glide. After moving toes outward, the knees straighten as the toes pull back together. The start is optional, with a minimum of 6 to 8 continuous swizzles, demonstrating a forward gliding action.
7. Snowplow Stop. While moving forward with arms held out slightly to the front and parallel to ice, the heels of the feet are angled slightly out. Do a two foot or one foot stop movement in which both feet (or one foot) create a skidding action (making snow) on the ice, creating a complete stop.
8. Two foot hop on a Spot. From a standstill position do a small jump in place, landing on two feet (toes first). Use a slight knee bend prior to and after the hop. Maintain balance with arms held out slightly to the front, parallele to the ice.
9. Backward wiggles, six to eight in a row. Stand with the feet held in a parallel position and the width of the hips apart. As the hips turn side to side, the arms move against this hip action to create a backward motion. Minimum of 6 to 8 wiggles.

Basic 2
1. Forward one foot glides, right and left. After a moving start, balance in a two foot glide position. Pick up one foot with the free toe held firmly behind skating heel. Shoulders will be square to the line of travel, while arms are held slightly in front parallel to the ice. Balance will be maintained, with the ankle erect, for a distance of one times the skater's height.
2. Continuous forward slalom, six to eight in a row. Alternate forward one foot swizzles in a zigzag pattern. Begin the one foot swizzle as the toe of the pushing foot angles slightly out, while pressure is applied to the inside edge. The skating knee bends and the body balances over the skating leg. As the skating knee straightens, move and putll the pushing foot back to a parallel position. Repeat this action on the opposite leg and do this altermating pattern across the ice for a minimum of 6 to 8 continuous one foot swizzles.
3. Backward two foot swizzles, six to eight in a row. While moving, use an in and out simultaneous movement of both feet on inside edges. Toes of both feet are turned in, while the heels are angled out, bend both knees and apply pressure on the inside edges allowing feet to glide backward. The knees then straighten as both heels pull back together. Demonstrate a minimum of 6 th 8 continuous swizzles with a backward gliding action.
4. Backward two foot glide. With an optional start, create speed to move backward. Arms are held parallel to the ice and slightly forward in a standard skating position. Glide on both feet, and with ankles erect, and balance on the ball of the feet, hold feet parallel and 4 to 6 inches apart. Glide is held for a minimum distance equal to one time the skater's height.
5. Continuous backward slalom, four to six in a row. After gliding backward, altermate backward one foot swizzles in a backward zigzag pattern. To begin the one swizzle the heel of the pushing foot angles slightly out, while pressure is applied to the inside edge. The skating knee bends and the body balances over the skating leg. As the skating knee straightens, move and pull the heel of the pushing foot back to a parallel position. Repeat this action with the opposite leg and do this alternating pattern across the ice for a miminum of 4 to 6 continuous one foot swizzles.
6. Two foot turn from forward to backward on a spot. Stand with feet held parallel, 4 to 6 inches apart. Move one arm forward, and the other back to rotate the shoulders against hips to start the turn action. Release the hips allowing the body to turn. Knees should be soft(bending) and balance is over the middle to front of the blade during the turn.
7. Moving snowplow stop. With arms held in a standard skating osition, perform four to six strokes. Glide on two feet, then bend knees as feet angle out slightly from heels. Apply pressure to the inside edges of the blade and create a skid (making snow). Come to a complete stop, holding balance for three seconds. (Coach will count)

Basic 3
1. Forward stroking showing correct use of blade. The thrust must be made from the inside edge of the blade without using the toe pick. Bring the feet close together and bend the knees before each push. (Do not expect a long glide on one foot at this stage.)
2. Forward one foot swizzles on a circle, six to eight consecutive, clockwise and counter clockwise. The swizzle (pushing) foot will not leave the ice. By keeping the body weight over the skating side, the non-swizzle foot will be as nearly on a forward outside edge as possible. Arms are held level and parallel to the ice with the arm on the outside of the circle held slightly in front, and the arm on the inside of the circle is slightly behind, (i.e. over the skating print). The head faces forward and slightly to the inside of the circle.
3. Backward one foot swizzles on a circle, six to eight consecutive, clockwise and counter clockwise. The swizzle (pushing) foot will not leave the ice. By keeping the weight over the skating side, the non-swizzle foot will be as nearly on a backward outside edge as is possible. Arms are held level and parallel to the ice with the arm on the outside of the circle held toward the front of the body, and the arm on the inside of the circle held slightly toward the back of the body, (i.e. over the skating print) the head faces into the circle and in the direction of travel.
4. Moving forward to backward two foot turns, clockwise and counter clockwise. These turns are done while moving and gliding forward on two feet in a circle. Rotate the arms and shoulders in the direction of travel. The turn is created by releasing the hips, allowing the action to reverse to a backward glide. Knees should be kept slightly bent and the balance of the feet is on the forward part of the blade during the turn.
5. Gliding backward on one foot, distance equal to the skater's height, right and left. With an optional start, create speed to move backward. After achieving a two foot glide position, hold arms slightly in front of the body and parallel to the ice, pick up one foot, holding the free foot firmly behind the skating heel. The balance of the body is over the skating side, skate on the middle front of the blade.
6. Two foot spin, two revolutions. Entry is optional. One option is to twist the arms and shoulders in opposition to the future spin direction. Then quickly bring both arms to front while giving small scull push with outside foot. Once the momentum for rotation is created, spin on two feet held in a parallel position with one foot moving and gliding forward and one foot moving and gliding backward. Shoulders and body are held in an upright and balalnced position. Minimum of 2 revolutions. Optional free leg position: After beginning rotation, with body balalnced in a two foot spin, pick up the right foot (if spinning counter clockwise) or the left foot (if spinning clockwise) or . The balance of the skating foot is on the ball to the front of the blade. The arms will be held and balalanced slightly in front of the body and parallel to the ice, as the shoulders remain in line with the hips. Hold the two foot spin for 2 to 3 turns and the one foot spin for 1/2 to 1 turn.

Basic 4
1. Forward outside edge on a circle, held two times the skater's height, right and left. The edges are skated while moving in a circle. After balancing on two feet, begin the edges by placing the future skating side arm and shoulder forward with the future free shoulder held firmly behind. Pick up the foot on the outside of the circle and glide on a forward outside edge in a balanced position over the skating side for 2 counts (coach will count). Now change and pass arms close to the body (with a scissor action). The free foot will follow, passing close by the skating foot, to a forward position and held over the print. Hold this position for 2 counts (coach will count).
2. Forward inside edge on a circle, held two times the skater's height, right and left. The edges are skated while moving on a circle. After balancing on two feet, begin the edges by placing the future free arm and shoulder forward with the future skating side shoulder held firmly behind. Pick up the foot on the inside of the circle and glide on a forward inside edge in a balanced position over the skating side for 2 counts (coach will count). Now change and pass the arms close to the body (with a scissor action). The free foot will follow, passing close by the skating foot to a forward position and held over the print. Hold this position for 2 counts (coach will count).
3. Forward crossovers, clockwise and counter clockwise, five consecutive crossovers. While skating forward on a circle counter clockwise stroke onto a left forward outside edge, then cross the right foot over the skating foot gliding onto a forward inside edge. Push the left foot under towards the outside of the circle and pick it off the ice toe first. The right arm will be held in front of the body over the circle and the left arm is held slightly behind. Arms to be held parallel to the ice. Repeat clockwise, switching right and left in the directions above. A minimum of 5 consecutive crosovers are required clockwise and counter clockwise.
4. Forward outside three turn, from a T-position, right and left. Stand still in a T-position with the opposite arm placed in front. Begin the three-turn by stepping onto a forward outside edge in the one foot glide position, balancing over the skating side. Rotate arms and shoulders into the circle, passing them close to sides. The hips reverse creating the turn, gliding onto a backward inside edge and remaining in the one foot glide position. During and after the turn balance is on the middle front of the blade. The edges into and out of the three-turn must each be held for a distance equal to the skater's height. Repeat on opposite foot.
5. Backward snowplow stop, right and left. While moving backward in a straight line with the arms held slightly in front of the body, lift and place one foot slightly to the side, with the free foot held on an angle and in a turned out position. Press the inside edge on the ice creating a skidding action (creating snow). Come to a complete stop. repeat on the opposite foot.

Basic 5
1. Backward outside edge on a circle, held two times the skater's height, right and left. The edges are skated while moving on a circle. After gliding on two feet, begin the edges by placing the future free arm in front of the body and the future skating arm behind the body. The free leg and foot are held firmly behind the skating leg and balance is over the skating side. This is the one foot glide position on a backward outside edge. Skate on the middle front of the blade. The head is facing into the circle. The edge must be held for a minimum of two times the height of the skater. Repeat on the opposite foot. Optional free leg positon: While moving on the circle once balance is achieved the free foot may be held in front at the beginning of the edge, then passed close to the skating foot to a backward balance position.
2. Backward inside edge on a circle, held two times the skater's height, right and left. The edges are skated while moving in a circle. After gliding on two feet, begin the edges by placing the future free arm slightly to the front and inside the circle as the future skating side arm is held slightly behind to the outside of the circle. The free leg and foot are held firmly behind the skating leg in the one foot glide position on a backward inside edge with balance over the skating side. Skate on the middle front of the blade. The head is facing slightly inside the circle. This edge must be held for a minimum of two tmes the height of the skater. Repeat on the opposite foot. Optional free leg position: While moving on the circle once balance is achieved the free foot may be held in front at the beginning of the edge, then passed close to the skating foot to a backward balance position.
3. Backward crossovers, clockwise and counter clockwise, five consecutive crossovers. Moving in a clockwise direction on a circle with head facing slightly inside the circle and the arms held over the circle print, do a backward one foot swizzle action with the right leg, and cross over the left foot (right foot remains on the ice during the push and crossover). Then push from the left leg to the outside of the circle. Pick up the left foot toe first, lift, and place it back inside the circle. Repeat this movement to complete the 5 consecutive crossovers. Repeat in counter clockwise direction with the left foot using swizzle action and the right leg stroking under. A minimum of 5 crossovers must be completed in the each direction.
4. One foot spin, minimum of three revolutions. From a two foot spin pick up the right foot if spinning counter clockwise, or the left foot if spinning clockwise. The arms are held slightly to the front of the body with free foot held in the balance position and the shoulders aligned over the hips. Skate on the ball of the foot and toward the front of the blade. The two foot spin is held for 2 revolutions and one foot spin is held for 3 revolutions.
5. T-stop with an outside edge skid, right and left. The stopping foot will be held behind and at right angles to the skating foot (instep of free foot to the heel of skating foot.) Place the free foot on the ice at a slight angle and apply pressure to the ouside edge of the blade. Increased pressure is applied to the ice creating a skid. (Stops made by scraping the inner edge of the blade are not permitted.) At the completion of the stop, remain still and balanced for approximately 3 seconds.
6. Side toe hops, both directions. Stand with the feet at shoulder width apart and arms extended to the sides. Begin a series of side hops with the leg reaching out to the side, then tapping the toe pick into the ice and doing a sideways leap by landing on opposite toe than take-off, remaining on the toe picks at all times. Perform 3 to 5 consecutive toe side hops, jumping from toe to toe in a straight line. Repeat this in the opposite direction.

Basic 6
1. Forward inside three-turn from a T-position, right and left. Stand in a T-position with the future skating side arm in front. Step onto a forward inside edge, in the one foot glide position. Rotate arms and shoulders into the circle, passing them close to body, then reverse the hips creating the turn. Turn will be done on the middle front part of the blade. Glide backward onto the outside edge, in the one foot glide position. The edges into and out of the three-turn must each be held for a distance equal to the skater's height. Repeat on the opposite foot.
2. Moving backward to forward two foot turn on a circle, clockwise and counter clockwise. While moving backward on a circle, balancing on two feet begin rotating the shoulders, arms and head outside the circle, passing arms close to body. Knees should be slightly bent. After the rotation of the upper body, reverse the hips creating the turn to the outside of the circle and glide forward. The action of the blades, is a rocking motion to the heel during the twisting action of the turn. The glide on the entry and exit will each be equal to the height of the skater.
3. Hockey stop, either right or left. Begin with a forward two foot glide, with feet held 4 to 6 inches apart, knees bent, shoulders in line with hips, and arms held out and slightly in front of body. Without moving shoulders and arms, turn hips and feet to the side. The feet will be on an angle to the ice as the edges of the blade create a skid. At the completion of the stop, remain still and balanced for approximately 3 seconds.
4. Bunny hop. While gliding forward and balancing over the skating side, swing the free leg with a backward to forward action. The skating leg will spring as the free leg passes and lifts into the air. The landing will be on the toe pick of the swung leg. After landing, push forward into a glide on the flat of the blade of the jumping foot.
5. Forward spiral on a straight line, right or left. While gliding forward, balance over the skating side with the free leg lifting in an extended and turned out position. The torso is lifted and stretched, the body then extends over the skating leg. The final position will be held with the free foot lifted to the hip level or higher and spiral position held for a count of 4 (coach will count).
6. Forward lunge, right or left. While moving forward, using free skating posture (head up, shoulders relaxed, arms extended and torso straight), bend the skating knee while turning out and extending the free leg (the free foot is held at a right angle to the skating foot). Continue bending until the inside of the free foot boot is on the ice. The move ends after balancing in this position, and then rising up on the skating leg to a balanced extended free skating position, leaving the free leg in an extended and turned out position behind the body.

Basic 7
1. Forward inside open Mohawk from a T-position, right and left. Stand in a T-position with the future skating arm forward and the future free arm held slightly behind. Step onto a forward inside edge. Prior to the turn, hold the heel of the free foot in turned out and angular position and move it toward the instep of the skating foot, stepping within the width of the hips. After changing feet, balance on a backward inside edge with the arms and free foot held in a firm position to control rotation and balance. The edges into and out of the Mohawk will each be held for a distance equal to the skater's height.
2. Backward outside to forward outside transition on a circle, right and left. Do 3 consecutive backward crossovers to a backward outside balance position. Change and pass arms close to the body as the head rotates facing outside the circle. Step forward onto the outside edge, holding a forward balance position. Place the skating side arm forward with the free arm and free leg held firmly behind to control rotation and balance. Each edge will be held for a distance equal to the skater's height.
3. Ballet jump, right and left. This jump consits of a 1/2 turn in the air preparing from a back outside edge. Extend the free leg back and then tap, spring, turn and then land forward on the toe pick of this leg. The position in the air has the free leg stretched, extended, and turned out behind the skate with the head facing forward. After landing push forward onto the forward inside edge of the extended airborne free leg, holding the landing position with free skating posture.
4. Backward crossovers to a backward outside edge (landing position), clockwise and counter clockwise. After doing 4 to 5 consecutive backward crossovers, step onto a backward outside edge with the body weight balanced over the skating side, free leg extended backward and turned out. The arms will be held with the skating side arm held firmly to the side of the body and the free arm held on an angle toward the front of the body. The torso of the body is extended and the head slightly facing into the circle. The skater will maintain this extended balance position for 4 counts (coach will count).
5. Beginning scratch spin. From a T-position step onto a forward outside edge. With free leg extended back and balancing over the skating side, begin rotating arms and then moving the free leg in a circular motion toward the front of the body. After achieving a balanced spinning position on a backward inside edge, the free leg will cross in front of skating leg as hands meet with the arms in a rounded posItion in front of the body and then pull in to chest. A minimum of 1 to 2 revolutions are required in this position.

Basic 8
1. Moving forward outside three-turn on a circle, right and left. After gliding forward on a circle push onto an outside edge in the one foot glide position with the free leg arm placed in front of the body and the skating side arm held firmly and slightly behind the body. Rotate the arms and shoulders into the circle, passing close to body, as the head faces into the circle. Reverse the hips, creating the three-turn. Use a rocking action to the middle front of the blade during the turn, and glide backward on the exit of turn. Continue the one foot balance position with the free arm and leg held firmly back. The head faces into the circle with the skating side arm held forward over the circle. The edges into and out of the three-turn must each be held for a distance equal to two times the skater's height.
2. Moving forward inside three-turn on a circle, right and left. As in the forward outside three-turn, glide forward on a circle and achieve balance in a forward inside one foot glide position with the skating arm forward and the free arm held firmly out to the side. Rotate the arms and shoulders into the circle, passing close to body, as the head also faces into the circle. Reverse the hips to create the turn, using a rocking action to the middle front of the blade during the turn and exit out of the turn in a firm backward outside balance position. The skating side arm is held firmly behind the body with the free arm held in front and over the circle and the head facing into the circle. The edges into and out of the three-turn must each be held for a distance equal to two times the skater's height.
3. Stand still Waltz jump. Stand in a T-position and step forward onto an outside edge, with the skating knee bent and arms pressed behind. The free leg begins a continuous motion into the air, as the jumping knee and arms begin a forward action to spring into the air. In the air, stretch the legs outward creating a floating arc as the body rotates a half of revolution. Land over the skating foot with the skating knee bent. Body alignment is achieved on an extended backward outside edge postiion.
4.Mazurka, right or left. A simple half turn jump beginning from a back outside edge with the body facing outside the circle. Tap the toe of the extended free leg while pushing the skating leg through and forward in a scissor action. Land on the toe pick of this pressed through leg. After landing, push forward into a glide on the opposite foot.
5. Combination move: Forward crossovers (2) into forward inside Mohawk, cross behind, step into backward crossover (1) and step to forward inside edge, repeat three times, clockwise, and counter clockwise. After moving forward in a circle counter clockwise, the following series of steps are skated with free skating posture:
  1. Two forward crossovers.
  2. Right forward inside Mohawk (RFI-LBI mo)
  3. Step down onto a RBO edge.
  4. Step or cross behind onto a LBI edge.
  5. One backward crossover.
  6. Step forward to a RFI edge (LBI-RBI mo).
Repeat this step sequence three times in each direction.
6. Forward inside pivots, right and left. Place the toe pick of one foot in the ice. While bending the knee of this leg the opposite leg pushes or pumps on a forward inside edge around the picking toe. Begin this action with the pumping foot turned out at a right angle to the skate involving the toe pick. The arms are extended and rotate with the head and shoulders over the bent knee. The torso is held in an upright and balanced position during this action.

Freestyle 1
1. Advanced forward stroking Strong open strokes are done down the sides of the arena followed by advanced forward crossovers around the ends of the arena. Stroking will use good edge pushes and free skating posture: arms extended, shoulders relaxed, head up with free leg extended and turned out.
2. Basic forward outside and forward inside consecutime edges, four to six edges. Begin edges from a standing T-position. Free leg will be initially held with the free toe to skating heel and passed forward to a straight free leg position (not a swing roll free leg). Edges will be performed with each step down placed perpendicular to the long axis. Good control of balance over the skating side as well as control of rotation is expected. A minimum of 4 to 6 edges is required.
3. Scratch spin from backward crossovers, minimum of three revolutions. After crossovers, do final deep crossover to strong back inside edge. Step to a controlled forward outside edge to enter the spin. A three-turn will occur and the spin begins as balance is achieved on a backward inside edge. Gradual acceleration begins by moving and placing the free foot toward the top of skating knee, and then drawing arms close to the body. The spin is held for a minimum of 3 revolutions and exits into a back outside edge, held two times the height of the skater.
4. Waltz jump, from two to three backward crossovers.. Enter waltz jump, after 2 to 3 back crossovers, controlling rotation of the entry edge to create a coordinated effort into the air between jumping leg, free leg and arms. There will be a floating arc as body rotates a half revolution, landing with balanced body alignment over the skating side in an extended position. The landking position will be held for a distance equal to two times the skater's height.
5. Half Flip. Enter from either a FI Mohawk or a FO three-turn. The half flip is done from a straight backward inside edge. The same arm as skating leg is held in the front, as opposite leg extends and reaches to tap into the ice. The skating leg straightens and free leg vaults beginning lift into the air. After rotating 1/2 turn, land on the opposite toe from the take off toe. Step immediately into a glide on the opposite foot holding for two times the skater's height.
6. Advanced backward outside three-turns, right and left. After moving on a circle, the backward three-turn will be executed with the free leg held in front throughout the turn, stressing shoulder against hip rotation before the turn and shoulder against hip after the turn to control body rotation. Entry and exit edges will each be held the skater's height.

Freestyle 2
1. Basic backward outside and backward inside consecutive edges, four to six edges From a stand still, perform a back pushoff. After pushing, the free leg will be held firmly in front, passed close to the skating foot and then held close and firmly behind skating heel. Arms will also pass close to the body. On back outside, head looks inside the circle, and then rotates to outside. On back inside, head looks outside the circle, and then rotates to inside. Edges will be performed with each new step done perpendicular to the long axis.
2. Waltz jump, side toe hop, waltz jump sequence. Begin this sequence from backward crossovers. Each part of the sequence is skated with good free skating posture and control of rotation. The landing of the final jump will be held for a distance equal to two times the skater's height.
3. Forward outside and forward inside spirals, clockwise and counter clockwise, right and left. All spirals RFO, LFO, RFI and LFI will be done after moving on a circle. Expect to see one side stronger than the other. Each spiral will be held for a distance equal to two times the skater's height.
4. Toe Loop. After doing a controlled forward inside three-turn, the free leg reaches backward and slightly outside the direction of travel. The take off occurs as the skating foot draws past the tapping foot continuing the momentum into the air (NO toe waltz jumps). In the air, the legs stretch out to create a flowing arc. The landing will be achieved balanced over the skating side holding the basic outside edge with control, for a distance two times the skater's height.
5. Waltz threes, right and left. While moving on a circle, the body positions during the turns will be held firmly in an extended free skating position. Note: The waltz threes will be done with an extended free leg throughout the turn. The entrance edge and the exit edge of the three-turn will be held three times the skater's height.
6. Beginning back spin, minimum of one to two revolutions. Initiate the rotation of the spin from a back inside pivot. Balance is achieved over the skating side, spinning on a BO edge on the ball of the foot, with the free foot held firmly crossed in front of skating leg. A minimum of 1 to 2 rotations is required in this position.
7. Continuous forward Progressive Chassé sequence, clockwise and counter clockwise. There are 4 steps to compete a sequence:
  1. RFO, LFI, RFO, LFI - clockwise
  2. LFO, RFI, LFO, RFI - counter clockwise
When moving clockwise in a forward direction with a RFO stroke, the left foot is brought forward and placed beside the right, progressing ahead of the right foot onto a LFI edge. A right forward outside stroke completes the Progressive and becomes the first step of the Chassé. The Chassé continues with the step onto the left foot as the right foot lifts slightly off the ice and vertically alongside the left. Now stroke onto the RFO edge to begin the second sequence. Do the Progressive Chassé sequences to complete a full circle. Repeat in a counter clockwise manner.

Freestyle 3
1. Forward and backward crossovers in a figure eight. Perform forward crossovers in a figure eight pattern using hockey circles, with four to eight crossovers per circle. Perform backward crossovers in a figure eight pattern using hockey circles, with five to eight crossovers per circle. Both directions of crossovers will be skated with good free skating posture. A one or two foot glide may be utilized when changing circles. A full figure-eight pattern in each direction is required.
2. Salchow. After using an outside three-turn or inside Mohawk, balance over the backward inside edge before take-off. The free leg is then moved forward in a wide pattern similar to the forward spin as the back inside edge deepens helping to initiate the rotation of the jump. In the air, the legs create a floating arc as the body rotates. The landing will be achieved balanced over the skating side, holding the back outside edge with control, as least two times the skater's height.
3. Advanced forward consecutive swing rolls, four to six edges. Consecutive rolls held for several counts during which, the free leg is first held back, then swings forward. The free leg will be held behind in an extended position for 2 to 3 counts, then passed forward to an extended position for 2 to 3 additional counts (coach will count). Each roll will begin by using open strokes and stepping perpendicular to the long axis.
4. Half Lutz jump. The jump will be executed from a proper back outside edge take off. Except for the entry edge, this jump is done in the same manner as the half flip.
5. Waltz jump/toe loop jump combination, or Salchow/toe loop jump combination. This combination will be done from an advanced entrance, using a balanced and extended back outside edge entry. Perform the waltz jump (explanation in Free Skate 1) or the Salchow (described in Free Skate 3). Land on back outside edge, with upper body position is strong and extended during the landing. Reach free leg back and jump from this back outside landing edge into a toe loop. (Explanation in Free Skate 2). Now tap the free toe into the ice and jump from the original back outside landing edge into the toe loop (explanation in Free Skate 2). Landing is held for two times the skater's height, and in a balanced and extended position.
6. Backward inside three-turn, right and left. After moving in a circle, this RBI or LBI three-turn is made on one foot from back inside edge to forward outside edge. Free foot placement after the turn is optional.
7. Back spin with free leg crossed, min. 3 revs. Entrance is optional. Spin should come to crossed foot position while arms are brought in. This position should be held for a minimum of 3 revolutions, finishing with a back outside edge exit. (See Freestyle 2.)
8. Waltz Eight. Start from a stand still position, to a RFO three-turn for a count of 6. (Do the turn on the count of 4). Make a transition onto a left back outside edge. The body positions during the LBO edge will change and rotate to outside of the circle for a count of six. Complete the circle by stepping forward onto the original RFO starting position holding for a count of 6 as the RFO edge completes the first circle of the Waltz Eight. Repeat pattern to the left to complete one figure eight pattern.

Freestyle 4
1. Loop jump. After entering from a three-turn or a Mohawk, take off from a back outside edge of the skating foot, with free leg lifting in front and rotating one full turn in the air. Land on the take-off leg in a balanced and extended position. Landing is held a distance equal to two times the skater's height.
2. Waltz jump/loop jump combination. Using a controlled entry, combine the waltz jump and loop jump. After completing the waltz jump, land with upper body controlled solidly over skating side, with the free foot held in front. Lift into the loop jump, landing in a balanced and extended position gliding at least two times the skater's height.
3. Spiral sequence: forward inside spiral, forward inside Mohawk, backward outside spiral, clockwise and counter clockwise. While moving in a circle, complete a forward inside spiral. Recover to upright position, do a forward inside Mohawk and then push into a backward outside spiral. Each spiral is held a distance of 2 to 3 times the skater's height.
4. Forward power three-turns, minimum of two to three consecutive sets, right and left. Do a LFO three-turn, controlling body rotation with balance over the skating side and arms and free leg held in an extended free skating position. After the three-turn, do a wide step and power push to a two foot balance position (right knee is bent, left leg is straightened with head facing in the direction of travel and over the right side, shoulders and arms are held parallel to the print). Now reverse and pass arms close to the body (head follows facing the left side of body), as a wide power push shifts the body weight to a second two foot balance position (left knee is bent, right leg has straightened). Body weight is balanced over left leg. Now do a right back crossover. Step forward and then repeat the sequence: LFO 3, wide step to power push, change arms and head, power push, back crossover, step forward. Repeat same sequence starting with the RFO 3, minimum of 2 to 3 consecutive sets are required.
5. Continuous backward progressive Chassé sequence on a circle, clockwise and counter clockwise. There are four steps to complete a sequence:
  1. LBO, RBI, LBO, RBI - clockwise.
  2. RBO, LBI, RBO, LBI - counter clockwise.
When moving clockwise in a backward direction start with a LBO stroke. The right foot is brought backward and placed beside the left foot and travels past the skating foot onto a RBI edge. A left back outside stroke completes the progressive and becomes the first step on the Chassé. The Chassé continues with the step onto the right foot as the left foot lifts slightly off the ice and vertically alongside the left. Now stroke onto the LBO to begin the second sequence. Do the progressive Chassé sequences to complete a full circle. Repeat in a clockwise manner.

Freestyle 5
1. Flip jump. Enter from a FI Mohawk or a FO three-turn. The flip is done from a straight back inside edge. The same arm as skating foot in front, opposite leg extends and reaches back to tap and create a vault and spring into the air. Lift off the toe pick and rotate one full turn landing backward on picking foot with controlled upper body. Hold landing in a balanced and extended poition at least two times the skater's height.
2. Loop/loop combination. After completing the first loop jump, control the landing using firm arms to control body rotation and free leg held in front with body weight balanced over the skating side. Spring and lift immediately into the second loop jump landing in a balanced and extended position two times the skater's height. (No steps or turns between jumps).
3. Waltz jump/falling leaf/toe loop jump sequence. After completing an advanced waltz jump, take off from the back outside edge of the landing leg into the falling leaf by projecting the free leg forward turning 1/2 rotation and landing on the opposite toe from the take-off leg, step into a FI three-turn on the opposite foot, reach and tap into toe loop jump. Land on a balanced BO edge in an extended position. Hold landing for two times the skater's height.
4. Camel Spin, minimum of three revolutions. After entering from backward crossovers and completing a controlled spin entry, the camel will begin. The position will have the free leg height at least equal to the free hip and parallel to the ice. The upper body is inclined forward, with the back arched.
5. Forward upright spin to back upright spin, minimum of three revolutions, each foot. After competing the forward upright spin use a pivot action stepping over to the skating side of the opposite foot creating a back spin. Each spin will be held for a minimum of 3 revolutions with the free foot crossed in front of the skating leg. A strong core body balance must be achieved, to create a centered spin on both forward and backward spins.
6. Backward outside three-turn, forward inside Mohawk, into three backward crossovers, repeat three times, clockwise and counter clockwise. Each part of this circle activity: back three-turn, mohawk and back crossovers is executed in a strong free skating position, head up, shoulders relaxed, arms and legs extended, with control of rotation of body, free leg position, smoothness of knee action and gliding edges.
7. Spiral sequence, forward outside spiral, forward outside three-turn, one backward crossover, back inside spiral, clockwise and counter clockwise. This sequence of spirals, turns, and crossovers should be executed with great flexibility and balance. Moving clockwise, after holding the right forward outside spiral, the free foot is brought down in a controlled manner as the upper torso prepares for the RFO three-turn. After completing the three-turn do a backward crossover, and after pushing under the new free leg is extended into a right backward inside spiral on the same circle. The counter clockwise direction is executed in a similar fashion.
8. Forward outside Slide Chassé swing roll sequence, four to six lobes. The Slide Chassé is performed by first skating a left forward outside edge, the free foot is then brought close beside the skating foot and placed onto a forward inside edge. The new free foot is then slid forward and, this Slide Chassé is followed by a left forward outside swing roll, on the same lobe. Repeat this whole sequence of steps on the opposite feet and on a new lobe. Do this altermating sequences for 4 to 6 lobes.

Freestyle 6
1. Split jump or stag jump. Entry is either from a forward outside three-turn or a forward inside Mohawk to back inside edge position. Take off from toe tap backward, drawing and then projecting the leg and body forward into the air. The forward leg extends into either a split position or stag position. Land on the opposite toe from the take off toe. Step immediately into a glide on the opposite foot and do a FI three-turn.
2. Lutz jump. Skater takes off from a gliding backward outside edge assisted by the toe tap and turning one full rotation in the air. Take off occurs with the skating leg's straightening action combined with the vault by the tapping leg. Landing is on a backward outside edge, in a balanced and extended position. Hold for two times the skater's height.
3. Waltz jump/half loop/salchow jump. This sequence of jumps is skated with good speed and maintains good landing positions. After landing an advanced waltz jump and landing with the free leg in front, perform a half loop by lifting and rotating a full turn to land on the opposite leg on the back inside edge. Balance over the skating side and control rotation, then do a Salchow jump to controlled landing position.
4. Axel, walk through, preparation, jump. Walk through the action of the Axel: Step onto take off leg, free leg steps through into air position, do 1 turn in a back spin position, do preparation to land, then balance in landing position. Preparation: Jump forward as in waltz jump doing one full turn, landing forward on a one foot or two foot glide. Jump: Use either a stand still entry or, backward crossovers. Prior to the take off, stand firmly over skating side with head facing direction of travel, both arms are pressed behind the body, and free leg extended back. The jump begins in a coordinated effort between jumping leg, free leg and arms lifting forcefully into the air. After stepping into the air transfer weight over the free leg and at that moment the arms pull close to the body as rotation continues over the skating side. After rotating 1 1/2 turns, land powerfully over the landing leg with quick arms and free leg exiting jump.(Learning this jump off-ice is also a good preparation for on ice jumps). (Jump does not need to be landed to pass this level.)
5. Camel/sit spin combination, minimum of five revolutions total. This spin combination includes the two positions, camel and sit spin. Body lines should be fully extended in both the camel and sit positions. A minimum of 5 total revolutions is required for the combination spin.
6. Alternating backward crossovers to backward outside edges, four to six lobes. After a moving start is achieved perform 1 back crossover to a back outside edge extension postion. Repeat in the opposite direction on a new lobe. A minimum of 4 to 6 lobes is required.
7. Five step Mohawk, clockwise and counter clockwise. Perform the sequence on a circle woth emphasis on power and extension. Counter clockwise, the steps are RFI-LBI Mohawk, RBO, step forward to a LFO, slide chassé to a RFI. Repeat series 3 times. Feet should step close with free skating posture maintained at all times. repeat steps clockwise.
