Practical
Moral Philosophy for Lawyers
Course Information
(1) My office is Rm. 110. I will be available on Tuesday and Thursday
after class if you would like to talk with me about the course, the
texts we are reading, our class conversations, or your writing for
the course.
I generally work at home and can always be reached by email: jelkins@labs.net
or telephone (the number which you can obtain from my secretary
or the phone book).
(2) My secretary is Karen Feathers. She is located in Rm. 117.
(3) The course depends upon thoughtful, careful reading of texts
and participation in classroom conversations. Following
Socrates (a celebrated teacher), the philosophy of most interest in
the course will be the philosophies you bring
to the course. Consequently, your participation in the work of
the course will be seriously undermined if you fail to attend, listen,
speak your mind, seek agreement, and articulate your disagreements
not only with your colleagues but your teacher. This means you should
be present for each class. Failure to attend class may be taken into
account in determining your grade for the course. This reduction in
grade for failure to attend class may be exercised even though formal
attendance is not taken.
(4) An announcement of course reading assignments will be made in
class and can also be determined by accessing the course web site.
(5) If you have (or find) materials or readings relevant to
our class discussions, bring them to my attention and I will
try to incorporate them in the course.
(6) The reading assignments for the course are drawn from xeroxed
materials and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.
