Speculative Forgeries Illustrated

Following are just a few of the hundreds of forged overprint stamps that are available:

Ukrainian Forces in Bosnia

Soviet (Scott #5838) stamp overprinted with "1994 Ukrainian Forces in Bosnia -- 50cents."

A couple of features that make this stamp attractive to a collector include the overprinting of the inverted stamp and the historic reference to the Bosnia peacekeeping force.

Pope John-Paul II overprinted on a Soviet stamp

Soviet (Scott #5984) stamp overprinted with image of Pope John-Paul II.

This 200k overprint is said to be from L'viv.

Sumy coat-of-arms overprinted on Soviet stamp

Soviet stamp overprinted with the coat-of-arms of the Sumy district.

Virtually every district in Ukraine has its own bogus version of a coat-of-arms overprint.

Ternopil "local" on Soviet stamp

Soviet (Scott #5839) stamp overprinted with "Ukraine Post" and "Ternopil," a major city in Ukraine.

This is a particularly sneaky stamp, because it is very similar to a number of overprinted provisional stamps, such as the legitimate (popup link) Mikolaev-7 series, which appears in Lobko's Catalog.
