The Ethnographic DefinitivesAnother early series of definitive stamps for everyday use was called the "ethnographic scenes," which featured traditional images of old rural life, including hay cutters from the Bukovina region, Chumak salt traders from the Sloboszanka region, a shepherd (pictured below) from the Tavria region, and reapers from the Cherkasy region. Stamps in this series were released on 18 December 1993, and they featured a pictorial cancellation done in Kyiv.
In 1993, inflation was totally out of control (note the increased value of these stamps from the previous year). As a way of dealing with this problem, postal authorities assigned "floating values" to the second ethnographic series, which was issued on various dates in 1994. The first, an "A" class, once again featured the shepherd. It was released on 28 May 1994. |
